Colombia

Colombia's popularity as a tourist destination has increased since a government offensive against FARC in the mid-2000s vastly improved security in most of the country. There are still unsafe areas, but most tourist destinations are fine. Read up on the latest travel warnings before you go. Bogota, the capital, offers great festivals and nightlife.

Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast, is an elegant, walkable city with fabulous architecture and a multicultural population. Nearby Barranquilla has a world famous spring carnival each year. There are a number of wonderful national parks, such as the high-altitude trekking destination of Los Nevados, or Tayrona, which protects a beautiful section of Caribbean coastline.
