Colombia's popularity as a tourist destination has increased since a government offensive against FARC in the mid-2000s vastly improved security in most of the country. Cartagena, on the Caribbean coast, is an elegant, walkable city with fabulous architecture and a multicultural population. Nearby Barranquilla has a world famous spring carnival each year. There are a number of wonderful national parks, such as the high-altitude trekking destination of Los Nevados, or Tayrona, which protects a beautiful section of Caribbean coastline.
