Independent since 1978, Tuvalu consists of nine islands and is one of the smallest countries in the world. Fongafale is the capital and receives international flights from Fiji. It is on the largest island of Funafuti, a narrow strip of land bordering an atoll. There is only one hotel but it has a bar and even a dance floor. There are several other lodges.

The Funafuti Conservation Area covers the neighbouring islets and a large lagoon. It is one of the most vulnerable nations in the world to sea level rise. Only a thousand tourists are estimated to visit each year.
