Tonga – the Friendly Islands, are the only Pacific nation never to have been colonised. There were pro-democracy riots in the capital, Nuku'alofa in 2006 which saw much of the town burn down and 8 people die. Tourists were not targeted, democracy has been slowly advanced in the time since then, and Tongans have restored the image of their island. Facilities tend to be quite basic.

There are a few tourist sites on Tongatapu and numerous watersports activities. There are several resort islands just off the coast. Nearby 'Eua has great beaches, trekking and spectacular cliffs on the eastern side. It is the highest island in Tonga.
