Solomon Islands

The Solomon Islands are a collection of nearly 1000 islands off the coast of Papau New Guinea. The capital, Honiara, is located on the island of Guadalcanal, where heavy fighting between Japanese and American troops for a crucial airstrip occurred early in the WWII campaign. It was the first landing by US troops and the beginning of their island-hopping strategy.

Crime rates are high, as are ethnic tensions. There were serious riots in Honiara in 2006. Tourism is almost non-existent and mostly war-related. It is an important ally of Taiwan, giving it vital votes in the UN. A tsunami in 2007 killed 52 people.
