Kiribati

Kiribati was the site of the notorious Battle of Tarawa in World War II. Kiribati separated from Tuvalu in 1978 and became independent in 1979. In 1995 the government moved the International Date Line so that all of its territory was in the same time zone.

One of its islands, Christmas Island, then became the first place in the world to see the dawn of the new Millennium (or any day). Kiribati is one of the poorest countries in the world. It is far less developed than other Pacific nations, and tourism there reflects this. Most people live in villages. There are very few hotels but plenty of guesthouses.
