Despite 4 coups since gaining independence from Britain in 1970, the most recent one in 2006, Fiji continues to attract many visitors. Tourism is vital to the islands and politics doesn't seep into the resorts. Nadi, on the largest island of Viti Levu is the centre of tourism, with an 800 metre beach and a large Hindu temple.

Many other nearby islands can easily be visited. The interior of the main island is hilly but not mountainous, and a great place to explore. Navala is a particularly pretty village here, in the Nausori Highlands. Temperatures vary little between summer and winter.
