Coral Sea Islands

The Coral Sea Islands are a group of tropical islands off the Great Barrier Reef and are a territory of Australia. They are uninhabited apart from a meteorological station on Willis Island. There is no airport and no port or harbour. There are several lighthouses.

In 2004 a group of gay and lesbian protesters declared the islands to be the Gay and Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands. With echoes of Israel's right of return, any person can gain citizenship of the kingdom by virtue of being gay or lesbian. It remains unrecognised by the Australian, or any other, government.
