Saint Kitts and Nevis

Achieving independence from Great Britain in 1983, Saint Kitts and Nevis is comprised of two volcanic islands and is the smallest nation in the Americas. A 1998 referendum for Nevis to secede failed. Most of the population lives on the coastal ring roads circling the volcanoes. The islands are famous for their monkeys, turtles and restored British fortifications.

None are better than the Brimstone hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The hike up Mount Liamuiga on St Kitts is a great way to see the rainforest, with extraordinary views from the top. Some cruise ships stop off at the islands.
