The poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, Haiti occupies the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic. It has long been beset by corruption, terrible poverty and gang violence. In the hurricane belt and prone to severe flooding, tt has suffered the effects of extreme deforestation, with 98% of its trees now gone.

A devastating earthquake in January 2010 killed an estimated 220,000 people and has left much of the population living in refugee camps. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel to the country. Many foreign aid agencies operate there. French and Haitian Creole are the official languages.
