Belize is not noted as a popular tourist destination but is the only country in Central America with English as its official language due to its British Colonial Heritage. It is famous for the quality of the diving and snorkelling among its Caribbean coral reefs. There is excellent fishing to be had too.

More than half of the country's land area is forested, and there are many well-preserved Mayan temples hidden within. Guatemala maintains a claim on the entire territory of Belize, though relations are reasonably good considering that fact. Most of the population lives on the coastal plain and it takes only around 5 hours to traverse the country on the main highway.
