This tiny island nation in the Caribbean gained its independence from Britain in 1966. It is famous for its high-quality rum and the friendliness of its people. It is a popular port of call for cruise ships. There are high-end resorts on the west coast, while the east faces the Atlantic Ocean and is a good deal wilder in nature.

The interior is hilly and has plenty of roads which make for a nice, if slow, drive. Barbados has the added advantage of lying outside the principal hurricane strike zone. Singer Rihanna grew up in Bridgetown until the age of 16.
