Sweden's three largest cities are Stockholm, the capital, which is built on a series of islands close to a 24,000 island archipelago, Gothenburg and Malmo, home to the controversial Turning Torso and only 30 minutes by train from Copenhagen in Denmark. Hiking, and skiing enthusiasts are well catered for throughout the country.

Sweden is newly famous for the crime writing of Stieg Larsson, author of the Millennium series. The ice hotel in Jukkasjarvi in the north is the world's largest, and is, as you would expect, rebuilt every winter. The Kungsleden is an epic long-distance hike through the arctic wilderness.
