No visit to Serbia can be undertaken in ignorance of the wars which followed the breakup of Yugoslavia when Serb forces committed the worst atrocities seen in Europe since World War II. Tensions remain in border areas near Kosovo. Nevertheless, being at the heart of Europe ensures Serbia has a rich and varied heritage to match its unusual architecture and beautiful landscape.

Most of the country is easily accessible from Belgrade, which is seeking to restore its reputation as a place to visit. Many beautiful monasteries dot the landscape, and there is a huge medieval fortress in Smederovo – one of the oldest cities in Europe.
