Northern Cyprus

Northern Cyprus came into existence in 1974 when Turkish forces invaded after a military coup. It remains unrecognised by any country apart from Turkey, but relations with Cyprus have improved greatly in recent years. A border crossing was opened in the capital, Nicosia, in 2008.

There is a buffer zone between the two countries which is administered by the UN. St Hilarion Castle is a spectacular castle near Nicosia, perched on a large rocky outcrop. The people are liberal Muslims and alcohol is easily available. The only international flights are to Turkey. The climate is mild in winter and very hot in summer.
