Montenegro is a small former Yugoslav state on the Mediterranean. It became independent in 2006 without violence. It has quickly grown in popularity as a tourist destination. The town of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage Site on a bay surrounded by huge mountains. Climb or drive up the 15 hairpin bends on the road to Cetinje for incredible views.

The Tara Canyon in the north is the deepest in Europe, and has amazing rafting. The Monastery of Ostrog is set high in a cliff face and draws pilgrims from all faiths. Nearby Zabljak gives access to the mountains of the Durmitor National Park.
