The poorest country in Europe, Moldova may as well not exist for most tourists. Its neighbour, Romania, with whom it shares many aspects of its culture, is becoming more and more popular but few venture into Moldova. Coming from Ukraine is complicated by the presence of Transnistria, an unrecognised republic on a sliver of territory claimed by Moldova.

The capital, Chisinau, is wealthier than the rest of the country and has numerous monuments and museums, as well as some good parks, a host of nightclubs and the largest Jewish cemetery in Europe. Old Orhei is a historical complex near the city.
