Lithuania is the ugly sister of the Baltic states, but has charm nevertheless. With both Vilnius and Kaunas only 4 hours from Riga, it is easy to incorporate a trip across the border. Vilnius, is free of the hordes of tourists that can be found in Riga or Tallinn. The Hill of Crosses, near the Latvian border, is a unique attraction.

Over 100,000 crosses adorn the hill. The countryside is dotted with lakes and hillforts, and is rarely visited. The Aukstaitija National park near the Russian border is a popular destination for Lithuanians in summertime. The village of Purnuskes, 25km (15 miles) north of Vilnius has been calculated to be the geographic centre of Europe.
