A sovereign state since 1806, Liechtenstein has the distinction of having never engaged in military conflict. A tiny, mountainous state, it borders Switzerland and Austria. The Rhine runs along the Swiss border, and an excellent cycle path runs next to it. Skiing and hiking are other popular pastimes.

It is very wealthy, with one of the highest rates of GDP per capita in the world. The capital, Vaduz, is overlooked by Schloss Vaduz, the castle that is home to the royal family. Balzers in the south also has a beautiful castle on an outcrop. Crime rates are among the lowest in the world.
