Following its declaration of independence in 1991, Latvia quickly attracted European tourists to its capital, Riga, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is regarded as one of the prettiest cities in Eastern Europe. It has fantastic architecture and is a wonderful place to walk around if the weather is with you.

It also has a number of good museums such as the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia and the Museum of the Barricades of 1991. It also has many fine beaches and castles for the few who drag themselves away from the bars of Riga. Winter sports are popular and there are a wide variety of festivals.
