Hungary is a hugely popular tourist destination. Its capital, Budapest, sits on the Danube and is a great place to spend a few days. Buda Castle is a must, and Memento Park is a curiosity, an open-air museum featuring many Soviet-era statues which were removed after the 1989 revolution, which began in Hungary.

The Hungarian government's decision to remove part of its barbed wire fence on the Austrian border was the first tear in the Iron Curtain. The Szechenyi baths in Budapest are also a big draw. The flat plains that cover most of the country struggle to attract visitors.
