Although what is currently Belgium has been a stable and prosperous contry since 1830 despite the damage caused by the World Wars, cultural and linguistic divisions dominate political life. Tourists flock to the towns of Bruges and Antwerp, and bureaucrats congregate in the multicultural hub of Brussels.

It is one of only 2 places in which you can sample beer brewed by trappist monks (the Netherlands being the other) and is where French Fries were invented. It hosts several of the world's most famous bicycle races and gifted the world the greatest rider who ever lived - Eddy Merckx.
