Akrotiri and Dhekelia

Akrotiri and Dhekelia is a British Territory on the island of Cyprus which is comprised of two British military bases and some surrounding farmland. They were retained by the British government for strategic reasons upon granting Cypriot independence in 1960.

In the east, the road from Larnaca to the popular resort of Ayia Napa passes through Dhekelia, while Akrotiri borders the city of Limassol. The presence of the two bases remains a source of annoyance for the Cypriots. The laws of the territory closely mirror Cypriot laws. They are the responsibility of the UK Ministry of Defence rather than the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
