Following the devastating Vietnam War in the 60s and 70s, in which 3 million Vietnamese died, the victorious communist government introduced a series of reforms which began to open up the economy, prompting huge economic growth and an influx of tourists. It is notable for its beaches and its lush mountain scenery.

The famously beautiful Ha Long Bay is north of the capital, Hanoi. Vietnam's highest mountains are in the far north. There are several national parks. Phong Nha-Ke Bang has the world's largest cave. The biggest annual holiday is Tet, or New Year, occurring between January and March each year.
