Thailand is the most popular tourist destination in South-East Asia due to its diversity. A series of political crises after a 2006 military coup, along with some violent protest, did little more than inconvenience tourists, who continue to come in large numbers. The south is home to many beach resorts with all the trappings and vibrant nightlife along with well-developed island hotspots, while the north offers hill-trekking and some of the country's finest temples.

Bangkok is an intense, often megacity of 11 million people with crazy nightlife and beautiful palaces. Just to the north, Ayutthaya is the ancient capital of Siam.
