With the highest GDP per capita in the world, oil-rich Qatar is making a name for itself by winning the rights to host the 2022 World Cup. The Qatar Foundation, a trust fund of the ruling Al-Thani family, is the shirt sponsor of Barcelona FC. It has close military ties with the US.

With the only land border being with Saudi Arabia, most western visitors arrive in the capital, Doha, a rapidly changing city with some interesting forts and a number of museums where you can escape the stifling summer heat. The Corniche is a long promenade on the coast, popular with locals and tourists alike.
