Nagorno Karabakh

Nagorno-Karabakh is a landlocked country located entirely within Azerbaijan, with an Armenian majority. As the Soviet Union dissolved in late 1991, It declared independence and a three-year war ended in a ceasefire without a political solution. It is not recognised by any UN member. Access is only possible through Armenia and the Berdzor Corridor. Attractions include a long-distance hiking trail and a number of interesting monasteries.

The people are friendly and tourists are rare. The capital, Stepanakert, has the We Are Our Mountains Memorial – a monument to the long-living people. Much of the city is newly built, and there are numerous museums.
