Mongolia is a huge country famous for its empty desert steppes and the Gobi desert. It has the lowest population density of any country in the world. It can be bitterly cold or brutally hot, but gets amount of sunshine. The Trans-Mongolian railway runs through it on its way from Moscow to Beijing. There are numerous castles and temples throughout and a number of national parks. Paved roads are uncommon.

The capital, Ulaanbaatar, is notorious for pickpockets but violent crime is rare. Gorkhi-Terelj is a nearby national park with excellent horse-riding, trekking, and traditional yurt accommodation. Spectacular dunes and canyons can be visited in the Gobi Desert.
