Lebanon has thousands of years of history, but its recent history has been devastating. A 15-year civil war ended in 1990. It was twice invaded by Israeli troops in that time, and they remained in southern Lebanon until 2000. A brief war with Israel followed in 2006, and internal strife in the following years stopped short of another civil war.

Parts of the country, particularly the border areas, can be dangerous. But the wars haven't destroyed Lebanon's beautiful scenery. Beaches on the Mediterranean quickly become valleys and then mountains as you head inland. Cosmopolitan Beirut surprises many who merely associate it with the war as it possesses a sophistication and beauty.
