A mountainous, landlocked country in central Asia, Kyrgyzstan's borders are complex, with numerous exclaves. Ethnic violence briefly erupted in the southern city of Osh in the summer of 2010 which left 300,000 people internally displaced. The UK Foreign Office recommends against all travel to that area.

Lake Issyk Kul is surrounded by the majestic Tian Shan mountain range, and is as major a tourist spot as can be found in the country. There is excellent hiking, mountaineering and skiing available in the area. The capital, Bishkek, is dominated by soviet-style architecture, with a huge main square and an independence monument.
