Kazakhstan is big. No, that's the wrong word. Kazakhstan is huge, so much so that it spans two continents. Most tourism is concentrated in or near the cities of Astana in the north and Almaty in the far south. Astana is undergoing a remarkable multi-billion dollar transformation to make it worthy of being a capital city.

In winter temperatures there can drop to -40C (-40F) Almaty was the previous capital, before 1998. It is still the largest city, and expensive. It lies at the very foot of a massive mountain range, which opens up a huge range of outdoor opportunities.
