Tourism in Iraq is non-existent following the brutal 24-year dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and the brutal insurgency that began after the 2003 invasion by mostly US and UK troops. Though security is much improved, Iraq remains one of the most dangerous places on earth. Bombings, kidnappings and terrorist attacks are an ever-present threat. Any ransom demands tend to be exceptionally high.

Tourist visas are not currently being granted. Many parts of Iraqi history were looted and/or damaged during the insurgency due to the collapse of law and order throughout the country. No major ancient sites or modern remnants of Saddam's reign can be considered safe to visit.
