Being dubbed a member of the 'Axis of Evil' hasn't helped Iran's tourism industry. Nor has the repressive regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. There were serious protests in the capital, Tehran, in 2009 after controversial elections. Formerly named Persia, Iran has a rich history and ruins from across thousands of years.

The city of Isfahan, with gorgeous palaces and stunning mosques, is the most popular tourist destination. Persepolis has the ruins of an ancient city. Dizin is a popular ski resort north of Tehran. Qom is the holiest city in the country. Travel to the border areas is not recommended due to security problems.
