Georgia has lost much of its lustre as a tourist destination since the 2008 South Ossetia War. After troops occupied the valleys of South Ossetia, Russian forces beat them back all the way to the Georgian capital, Tbilisi, and South Ossetia declared itself independent. Georgia still regards it as its own territory, along with the breakaway republic of Abkhazia.

Tensions remain high in the country. Nevertheless, it has some fantastic beaches on the Black Sea, gorgeous mountain scenery and a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. Vardzia is a magnificent cave monastery carved into a mountain in the south of the country.
