Cocos (Keeling) Islands

The Cocos (Keeling) Islands are a territory of Australia in the Indian Ocean. There are two inhabited atolls and a number of coral islands. The population is less than 600. Temperatures stay in the high twenties Celsius. It was the scene of battles in both World Wars due to the importance of its cable station. It survived the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami without casualties.

The tourism industry is tiny due to the difficulty an expense of reaching the islands. There are only a handful of flights each week. It has a golf club, a motel, and cottages to rent, all on the West Island.
