Bahrain has been severely affected by violence related to the Arab Spring in 2011. Protests have the capacity to quickly turn violent. It is a constitutional monarchy where the Shia majority feel unrepresented by the Sunni rulers. Before 2011 Bahrain was reasonably popular for its liberalism within the region. Alcohol is legal and there is some excellent shopping.

It consists of several small islands between Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The 25 km (16 mi) long King Fahad Causeway links the country to Saudi Arabia. The Bahrain Fort is a visitor attraction in good condition near the capital, Manama, and has an adjoining museum.
