One of the most dangerous countries in the world, the government has no control over much of the country. Bombings, terrorist attacks and kidnappings are common. It has been in a state of constant war since 1979. Before that it was a popular stop for westerners on the hippie trail. But the wars have destroyed most of its infrastructure.

The 6th Century Bamiyan Buddhas were destroyed by the Taliban in 2001. The Khyber pass, linking Afghanistan to Pakistan is one of the oldest passes in the world and part of a historic trade route. The border area is now extremely dangerous though.
