Zimbabwe is famous for its recent bout of hyperinflation. After the withdrawal of its currency, US Dollars, Euro and South African Rand are all used now. A once prosperous country, it has descended into deep poverty under the decades-long rule of Robert Mugabe, who now shares power with Morgan Tsvangirai in an uneasy alliance.

Tourism in the country is rare outside of the spectacular Victoria Falls on the border with Zambia, although several countries have lifted travel warnings in the past couple of years. Though the situation has improved, violence and political violence remain a possibility in a tense atmosphere. There are severe food and medicine shortages, and mass unemployment.
