Notorious for the rule of the despotic Idi Amin, under which 300,000 people died, Uganda has been beset with conflict since he was ousted in 1979. The Lord's Resistance Army brutalised the population in the north for twenty years until 2007. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the northeast and there were bombings in the capital, Kampala, in 2010.

For those who do go, gorilla safaris in the west are very popular. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park offers the chance to hike through the jungle in search of them. There are numerous beautiful islands just off the shore in Lake Victoria.
