Ravaged by decades of war, Sudan is one of the world's harshest places. The UK Foreign office advises against all travel to much of the country. South Sudan seceded to form a separate nation in July 2011. Darfur remains within the country after accusations of genocide against Sudanese horsebacked militia known as Janjaweed. Several hundred thousand people are reported to have been killed, and millions displaced.

Tourism is discouraged by the government. Photography is only required with a permit. Foreign embassies are few, communications difficult and much of the country lawless in any case. Sudan is an Islamic, alcohol-free country.
