Even before the 2011 drought, Somalia has long been a byword for failed state. It is one of the poorest and most violent places in the world. The refugee camp across the border in Kenya that accepts its refugees has been in place for twenty years.

A 1990s civil war, after the north seceded to form the unrecognised Somaliland, led to a complete breakdown in law and order, and bands of fighters took to the Indian Ocean to become a serious modern-day piracy problem. Mogadishu is the capital, and extremely dangerous. Sharia law is strictly enforced where there is any law.
