Despite suffering the deadliest genocide of modern times in 1994, Rwanda has recovered strongly to enjoy many years of stability and has much to offer the tourist. The north is home to Volcanoes National Park, home to spectacular volcanoes, dense tropical rainforest and the chance to see rare mountain gorillas as were seen in the film Gorillas in the Mist.

Most visitors to Rwanda will pass through Kigali, in the centre of the country, and will visit the Genocide Memorial there, and its nearby counterparts to the south, the unnerving Nyamata and Ntarama memorials, former churches with preserved evidence of the genocide.
