The most populous country in Africa is approximately half Muslim and half Christian, and ethnic violence has plagued the Niger delta region over the past decade. Much of the country is unsafe for foreigners and there have been numerous instances of kidnappings of oil workers (the country has vast reserves of oil and is the world's 8th largest exporter).

Lagos is a fast-growing city, with over 10 million people, while the capital, Abuja, is notable in the region for being a completely planned city. The north of the country is almost entirely Muslim. Nigeria was a former British colony and achieved independence in 1960.
