In common with some of its neighbours in the Sahel, Niger is one of the poorest countries on earth. A number of recent kidnappings have led the UK Foreign Office to advise against all travel to most of the country except the southern border areas, where they advise against all but essential travel. The most recent coup was in February 2010. It has the world's highest infant mortality rate and an estimated 8% of the population is enslaved.

For visitors who do go, the fine W National Park spans Benin and Burkina Faso as well as Niger. The exotic desert city of Agadez has some marvellous architecture but is currently closed to foreigners.

Why you should go:

You want to buy a slave.

Why you shouldn't:

You are not a warlord.
