Many Europeans' introduction to Africa, Morocco has some of the best tourist infrastructure on the continent. The fabled, beautiful city of Marrakesh lies at the foot of the High Atlas Mountains and a wealth of year-round activities such as hiking and skiing. Merzouga, close to the Algerian border, offers camel treks on the country's highest sand dunes, the magnificent Erg Chebbi.

Casablanca is a name to stir the heart while Agadir is the place to go for a beach holiday. Control of Western Sahara in the south remains in dispute and few tourists visit the region, particularly since traffic to Mauritania has dropped.
