Malawi is more than a place to adopt a child. It's people are famously friendly and are for many the biggest reason to visit the country. However, it remains underdeveloped, and poverty is widespread. Anti-government protests in July 2011 led to many deaths. Nkhotakota on Lake Malawi was home to the famous explorer David Livingstone for a while.

Cape MacClear is a small fishing village popular with visitors and a great place to relax and do nothing. Away from Lake Malawi there are dramatic highlands, forests and lush plains. Basic accommodation is to be had almost anywhere, and is the best option for those who want to spend time with the native people.
