Libyan tourism was almost nonexistent for decades under the closed regime of Muammar Gadaffi. Although foreign workers were common, what few tourists arrived stopped coming after to the 2011 Civil War began. The country has several important Roman ruins such as Leptis Magna and can boast the place with the hottest temperature ever recorded on earth - Al 'Aziziyah with 57.8C (136F).

Ghat in the Sahara is as extremely remote and offers tough desert hiking. It lies on a historically important trade route. Security may be questionable for some time to come.
