A country of contrasts, Kenya is famous for its wildlife and its long-distance runners. Many fly to Nairobi, which has an excellent range of flights to Europe and travel into Tanzania. Lake Nakuru National Park has the largest flocks of flamingos ever recorded. The Masai Mara is synonymous with safaris while Mount Kenya – the second highest mountain in Africa – offers fantastic trekking and climbing.

There are many well-developed and popular resorts along the Indian Ocean coast. A bout of intertribal violence in 2008 severely damaged the tourist industry, which is highly concentrated in the south of the country. The northeast is home to many refugees from Somalia.
