Synonymous with famine since the 1980s, Ethiopia has a long and proud history. It was the only country in Africa to resist colonisation, save for 5-year occupation by Italian troops. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to many border areas due to recent kidnappings. There is continuing tension with Eritrea, after a war in the late 90s.

Most cities are in the highlands which cover the eastern half of the country, and offer quite cool temperatures. There are many national parks throughout the country with the chance to see a huge array of wildlife, and plenty of ruins, including castles – rare in the region – exist.
