Long one of the most popular tourist destinations in Africa, security issues during and after the February 2011 revolution has reduced the flow of tourists to a trickle. Former president Hosni Mubarak moved to the most popular resort, Sharm-el-Sheikh, unnerving the industry there, and the famous Pyramids and many ruins of Luxor such as the Valley of The Kings remain deserted.

Touts and 'guides' now compete even more aggressively than ever before. Whether that bothers you or not is up to you. General security is good but uncertain. The Israeli embassy was attacked by a mob in 2011 after a border skirmish.
