Republic of the Congo

Not to be confused with its neighbor, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Congo is far smaller, with most of its population in the southwest of the country, and the jungles of the north almost uninhabited. The capital, Brazzaville, lies across the Congo River from Kinshasa. Stability and safety in Congo are intermittent. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to eastern border areas.

There are a number of national parks in the jungle, but travel to and from them is difficult and dangerous. President Sassou won elections in 2009, and his presidency is opposed by much of the population.
